Stepping in to set the party’s Punjab house in order, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal will station himself in the state till the assembly polls early next year.
Kejriwal made the annou-ncement in Italy while interacting with members of the Punjabi diaspora. In a video uploaded on social media sites, Kejriwal hinted for the first time that he was open to talks with anybody for providing a “clean and corruption-free alternative” in the state but would continue his no-nonsense approach towards corruption.
“I am visiting Punjab from September 8 to 11. After that I have to undergo a surgery. By the end of the month, the party affairs would be directly under my control. To run it as per our values, we will talk to all good people, who may be upset with us at the moment but there would be no room in AAP for corrupt or immoral persons,” he said.
His announcement is important as the party is passing through a critical phase in Punjab. While Chhotepur was removed following allegations of corruption, the party’s campaign incharge and MP from Sangrur Bhagwant Mann has been booked for allegedly assaulting mediapersons in Fatehgarh Sahib.
Kejriwal said, “The people of Punjab will set the future of the state in the 2017 Assembly elections which has been collectively ruined by the Congress, the Akalis and the BJP. AAP is the only hope for them. But we can’t have any compromise on corruption. We will prefer to perish or make the biggest sacrifices but we will not leave our values. I also want to caution the Punjabis and the AAP workers that the next few months before the elections are very crucial. There will be many rumours and conspiracies against us. But I assure you that AAP will remain on the path of truth always.”
