Tension gripped Phagwara after two religious groups pelted stones on each other in Phagwara on Friday afternoon.
Heavy police force rushed to the spot and tried to control the situation. Both groups are demanding apologies from each other for hurting religious sentiments of each other.
Police said the clash occurred on Wednesday between Hindu outfit workers and Muslims who had held protest against unrest in Jammu and Kashmir triggered by the killing of top insurgent Burhan Wani.
Shiv Sainiks had forcibly closed three shops belonging to Muslims. Following this, the Muslims had gathered and decided to carry out a protest march before submitting a memorandum for taking action against the protesters. However, the Hindus opposed their protest that led to a clash between them.
Senior police officials reached the spot and tried to pacify both the parties but the situation was still tense.
