Navjot Singh Sidhu will nor contest elections : Sucha Singh Chhotepur
Sucha Singh Chhotepur, said on Thursday even if the cricketer-turned-politician joins the party, he will not be contesting the 2017 assembly polls.
Addressing a press conference, Chhotepur said this fact has been made clear by Sidhu’s wife, Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, as well as the party’s national convener, Arvind Kejriwal, who has said the former Amritsar MP will only campaign for the party. Praising Sidhu, the AAP state convener said it takes courage to resign and raise voice against wrongdoings of the government that you are a part of.
Indicating that the Sidhu couple was in touch with the AAP leadership in the past too, Chhotepur claimed Bharatiya Janata Party state legislator Dr Navjot Kaur had met Kejriwal in Delhi four months back.
The cricketer-turned-BJP leader, known for his non-stop and humourous commentary on many matters, landed in New Delhi at about 4.30 am on Thursday, but did not speak to reporters. He has not spoken publicly since he resigned from Parliament and made a philosophical statement amid a swirl of speculation that he is quitting the BJP and is headed to Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party ahead of crucial elections in Punjab, Mr Sidhu’s state.
Sources said Mr Sidhu could address a press conference tomorrow, Friday, to detail his political plans and that he could formally join AAP next week. No date has been set yet, top sources in AAP have told NDTV.
His wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu had on Tuesday described her husband’s silence as a “maun vrat ” for Guru Poornima. She also said that his resignation from the Rajya Sabha implies a resignation from the BJP. Mrs Sidhu, who too is a member of the BJP, has however not resigned.
