The BJP’s Uttar Pradesh vice president Dayashankar Singh kicked off a controversy while accusing BSP leader Mayawati of selling her party’s election tickets to the highest bidder. The larger controversy however came with his likening the former UP Chief Minister to a sex worker.
A video clip of the controversial remarks at a press conference, released by news agency ANI on Wednesday, showed Dayashankar Singh saying, “Mayawati has deviated from the principles that were outlined by Kanshiram.”
He then said her decision-making on ticket distribution was akin to that a sex worker.
According to TV reports Singh said, “Mayawati is selling tickets…She is such a big leader, a three-time chief minister…but she gives ticket (to contest) to anyone who gives her Rs 1 crore. If someone comes with 2 crores, she gives him a ticket. If somebody gives her 3 crores, she cancels the tickets of the previous candidates and chooses him. Today her character is worse than that of a prostitute.”
