My salary is Rs 5 lakh per month but I pay Rs 2.75 lakh in taxes: President Ram Nath Kovind

New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind, while visiting his native land in Uttar Pradesh, said he pays more than 50 per cent of his monthly income in taxes as he urged people to pay taxes duly for development. “I pay taxes too,” the President said as he remarked that people earned more than what he could save after making tax payments.

“Sometimes in anger if say a train is not stopping at a particular railway station, we stop it forcibly we even set it on fire. If a train is set on fire who loses? People say it is government property. It is the taxpayer’s money. I am mentioning this because everyone knows…there is nothing wrong…the President is the country’s highest paid employee but he also pays tax. I pay ₹ 2.75 lakh as tax each month. Everyone says I get ₹ 5 lakh a month, but it is taxed too,” Kovind said.

He reached Lucknow on Monday by the Presidential Express Train on a two-day visit.

The president, who is currently on a five-day trip to his home state, was welcomed by Governor Anandiben Patel, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, state ministers and a large number of senior officials and people’s representatives at the Charbagh railway station around noon.

From there, he went directly to the Raj Bhawan where he will spend the next two days. In the evening, the President will attend a high tea programme at the Raj Bhawan with senior judges of the Allahabad High Court, where Chief Justice of India Justice N V Ramana is also likely to be present.

On Tuesday, President will lay the foundation stone of Ambedkar Memorial Cultural Centre before flying to New Delhi.
