Indians held for rape in Harare, govt says no cricketer involved

Mumbai: An Indian cricketer, currently touring Zimbabwe, with the national team has been reportedly held for alleged rape of a local woman. The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Charity Charamba (also the spokesperson) confirmed the incident and said: “There are allegations of rape against an Indian national by a Zimbabwe woman.”

“We have investigated and forwarded the case to the courts for determination and we wait the outcome. He appeared in court on Saturday,” she told New Zimbabwe, an English daily.

The identity of the player has been kept a secret. The situation is complicated for the revelation of the name could sour relations between the two nations and ruin the reputation of cricket bigwig BCCI.
The police and intelligence officials reached the team hotel in Harare and the situation went out of control. A representative from the Asian nation tried to stop the player’s arrest.

News agency ANI reported that the Indian High Commissioner has been in touch with the Indian team and was following the matter closely. The agency also quoted sources to say that the reports of an arrest of the so far unnamed Indian cricketer are false.
Zimbabwean media reports that a member of the Indian cricket team was arrested in Harare for raping a local woman are incorrect, agencies quoted officials as saying on Sunday. Two Indian nationals unconnected with the team were held in this regard, they clarified.

After Harare Police arrested and produced an Indian national in the court on charges of raping a local woman in the Indian team hotel in Zimbabwe, the BCCI President Anurag Thakur has clarified that no Indian cricket team member or supporting staff was involved.
