Man accused of stealing cigarettes tied to tree, beaten up by mob

A mob tied a man to a tree and beat him up with many hitting him with belts and fists after alleging him of stealing beedis and cigarettes from a shop in Matoo Colony here.A video clip went viral on social media showing the alleged thief, Ganesh of Chhatisgarh being badly beaten up by the mob as others cheered.Laxman, who runs a kiosk of tobacco products in the locality, claimed around four to five youth struck at his house at around 11:45 pm on Saturday night.“They were all inebriated. I caught one of them and handed him over to the president of the locality. On president’s direction, I tied the youth with a tree in our locality, where he was beaten up by the locality members,” he said, adding the colony president warned him against approaching the police.
According to Laxman, it was at least the fifth time thieves struck the locality and took away valuables.
The alleged thief, Ganesh who lived in Trikuta Nagar admitted his involvement in various theft cases.
“We, around four people, steal valuables from shops and houses in the locality and later pay police their share. Last I paid a sum of Rs 2000 to Sainik Colony police for my release,” Ganesh told reporters.SHO Channi Himmat, Mohammad Aslam said an FIR was registered against the alleged, while two to three persons, who were identified with the help of the video that has gone viral, have been detained for questioning.“We will identify other people who beat the youth and book them under law,” Aslam said.
