Revelations by Simranjit Singh Mann on Miss Jagir and Parkash Badal

Jagir Kaur entered politics by joining Simranjit Singh Mann’s SAD (Amritsar) in 1991. She shifted to the Shiromani Akali Dal four years later as its working committee member. The influence of Dera Sant Prem Singh Murarewale, which she had been heading, among the Lubana community of Begowal helped her get elected as an SGPC member in 1996. Next year, she got the ticket from the Bholath Assembly seat, which she won.The then Akali leader Sukhjinder Singh (father of suspended AAP MLA Sukhpal Khaira) had been criticising former CM Parkash Singh Badal. The latter replaced him with Jagir Kaur as the party candidate from Bholath. After her first victory, Badal gave her the portfolio of Tourism Minister.Badal used Jagir Kaur to sideline then then SGPC chief Gurcharan Singh Tohra, with whom he was then having major differences. She was elected first woman SGPC chief in March 1999. Months later, her daughter Harpreet Kaur secretly got engaged and then reportedly married Kamaljit Singh. She got re-elected as MLA in 2002, but lost in the 2007 elections to Khaira. In 2012, she again won. Weeks after she was inducted by Badal as Minister for Social Welfare, Development of Women and Children, Jagir Kaur was convicted by the CBI on March 30, 2012. She remained in jail for about seven months, after which she got bail from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.Badal revived her political career by giving her the post of Istri Akali Dal chief, which she still holds.
