Demanding clemency for Bhai Rajoana, SGPC writes to President again

Bhai Rajoana’s Death Sentence: SGPC Seeks Time From Indian President to File Another Review Petition
Demanding clemency for Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, who is on the death row for assassination of former chief minister Beant Sinh, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has yet again sent a petition to the President and formed a panel to pursue it.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, SGPC chief Kirpal Singh Badungar, who also heads the seven-member panel, said, “In 2012 also, the SGPC had demanded clemency for Rajoana and written to the President. But no decision has been taken yet. So we have decided to send a fresh petition and the paner will meet the President, if need be.”
Badungar, who recently met the jailed terrorist in Patiala, said, “Rajoana has never talked about mercy or demanded clemency, but the SGPC feels the need for it.”
In his letter to the President, Badungar said, “This appeal echoes the sentiments of the entire Sikh community which is desirous of taking up this cause as Rajoana has preferred not to file any mercy petition on his own and, on the contrary, has sought expeditious execution.”
He said Rajoana’s death sentence, if executed, might result in a grave miscarriage of justice. “The need to approach you (President) has arisen due to the mental distress suffered by Rajoana with regard to the decision upon his fate,” he further wrote.
