Two groups of truck operators clashed in Maur on Monday. Two people were injured in the brawl, which also witnessed gun shots and use of sharp edged weapons.
Belonging to the Maur Mandi truck union, one group owing allegiance to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the another, which identifies itself with SAD, clashed with each other to gain the supremacy in the union.
Supporters of Resham Singh, former president of the union, who was a member of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) but has now joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and supporters of current president Gurjitpal Singh (a SAD supporter) clashed outside the union’s office. The clash took place following a brawl between the truck operators on Sunday evening. The police have booked Resham Singh along with 80 unknown people under section 307 (attempt to murder) of Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Arms Act. Udham Singh sarpanch of Kuttiwal Khurd village and brother of Resham Singh alleged that persons owing allegiance to SAD wants to capture the truck union.
He claimed that was despite the fact that majority of operators are supporting Resham. He also alleged when the members were holding a meeting on Monday morning, Gurjitpal Singh’s supporters attacked them while police remained a mute spectator. Senior Superintendent of Police Bathinda Swapan Sharma said members of both the groups have reported injuries and a cross-case has been registered in this regard. He said SHO was forced to fire two rounds in air to disperse the people.
