Udta Punjab elicited a thoughtful response from the audience in Chandigarh and across Punjab, as people praised its idea and underlined that it projected “reality” of the drug menace in Punjab.

On the day of the release of Udta Punjab in theatres across the state, security has been beefed up to prevent fringe elements from staging protests against the release. Several police teams have been deployed outside theatres in Punjab and Chandigarh.

To prevent any untoward incident, an alert has been issued in Patiala, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Pathankot. The political parties have appealed to the citizens to watch the movie, which is based on the existing drug problem in the state.

A Jalandhar girl says: “The movie aptly portrays that drugs are supplied in huge amount in Punjab, but they have somehow exaggerated the role of Punjab Police in it. I feel the political parties are the main culprits behind the drug menace in Punjab.”

Makhan Singh from Jalandhar says, “The movie has really been made very nicely. The roles of Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s are great. And about drugs, the problem is rampant not only in Punjab but in the whole of India. They haven’t named any particular political party. The politicians shown in the movie can be anyone, from any place in the whole country.

A young man from Jalandhar says, “The movie was really nice but one can’t watch it with the family. There were a lot of abuses in the movie, but they were authentically portrayed. I enjoyed watching it.”

A young woman at a mall in Chandigarh says the movie depicts reality, however harsh it is, and does not defame Punjab.

Ranjit Singh says, “This movie (Udta Punjab) is a mirror to what is actually happening in Punjab today. I am also a resident of Tarn Tarna, and in my district and Amritsar, the drug problem is really serious… Government should work against it. Youth should also learn from this movie that drugs are bad for them… so should drug sellers see how bad the conditions of Punjab are. Punjab will be finished off one day if this goes on… The movie shows the need to stop this menace.”
